What stands out in the data?

  • Size is not connectivity. São Paulo has fewer facilities than New York, but its exchange, IX.br, has more connected networks (1,869) than any other exchange in the data. Brazil's NIC.br runs IX.br as a non-profit, and Brazilian regional ISPs connect to it in large numbers.
  • Europe has the densest exchanges. DE-CIX Frankfurt (1,019 networks), AMS-IX in Amsterdam (856) and LINX LON1 in London (834) are each larger than any US exchange in the data; the largest US one is SIX Seattle (370).
  • US hubs spread networks across buildings. Ashburn's Equinix campus alone counts 523 networks present, but they connect through several exchanges rather than one dominant platform.
  • Some markets are thin in PeeringDB. Dubai shows 7 facilities and Johannesburg 14, yet NAPAfrica Johannesburg connects 544 networks: one large campus can matter more than many buildings.

How was the ranking built?

We downloaded every facility and exchange record from the public PeeringDB API on 19 October 2026 and kept the records of the 34 cities that have a page on RackProxies. A facility counts for a city when its latitude and longitude lie within 40 km of the city centre (great-circle distance). Operator names were shortened (for example "Equinix, Inc." to "Equinix").

Limits: PeeringDB lists only facilities and exchanges that operators registered; some campuses register each building, others one record; and "networks" counts self-declared presence, not traffic. Treat the figures as a consistent comparison, not as a census. The per-city pages, such as Frankfurt or Ashburn, add operators, buildings and distances.

What do people ask about datacenter cities?

What is the largest internet exchange by networks?

In this dataset, IX.br São Paulo, with 1,869 connected networks in PeeringDB on 19 October 2026. In Europe, DE-CIX Frankfurt led with 1,019. Exchange operators also publish traffic peaks, which rank differently.

Why is Ashburn called Data Center Alley?

Loudoun County, Virginia, markets the Ashburn area as "Data Center Alley" because of its concentration of datacenter campuses. PeeringDB lists 71 facilities within 40 km of Ashburn, run by 31 operators.

Does a bigger datacenter city mean a faster proxy?

Not by itself. Speed to a target depends on distance and on the route between the networks. A city with a large exchange gives more chances of a short local path, but the route depends on the network that holds the IP.

Can I reuse these figures?

Yes: quote them with a link to this page and the date. The records come from PeeringDB, whose data is public; check its terms before republishing the raw records.

Where can I rent an IP in these cities?

RackProxies rents dedicated datacenter IPv4 in all 34 cities and in Singapore and Hong Kong, from $1.29 per IP for 30 days as of October 2026. Availability varies; the checkout shows what is online. No KYC: pay in crypto.
