Quick answer
What is a datacenter proxy?
What is a datacenter proxy? It is a server with an IP address registered to a hosting network: your request goes to that server, and the website sees its IP instead of yours. RackProxies rents dedicated datacenter proxies, one customer per IPv4 address, from $1.29 per IP for 30 days as of October 2026. No KYC: you pay in crypto.
Datacenter proxy meaning in one table
| Where the IP lives | In a commercial datacenter, on a network (ASN) run by a hosting or transit company |
|---|---|
| What the website sees | The proxy's IP address, not the IP of your own connection |
| How IP databases label it | Usually "hosting" or "data center", which is accurate |
| Protocols at RackProxies | HTTP, HTTPS (CONNECT) and SOCKS5 |
| Static or rotating at RackProxies | Static: each IP stays the same for the whole rental |
| Allocation at RackProxies | Dedicated: during your rental, each IP is assigned to your account only and is not shared with other RackProxies customers |
| IP version at RackProxies | IPv4 only. IPv6 proxies are not sold yet |
| Price at RackProxies | $1.29 for 1 IP, $59.25 for 100 IPs ($0.59/IP), each for 30 days |
How does a datacenter proxy route your traffic?
A datacenter proxy sits between your program and the website, and it opens the connection to the website on your behalf. The website only talks to the proxy, so the source address it logs is the proxy's IP.
The path has four steps:
- Your program connects to the proxy at
IP:PORTand sends your username and password, unless your own IP is on the allowlist. - For an
https://address, the program asks the proxy to open a tunnel with the HTTPCONNECTmethod (RFC 9110) or with a SOCKS5 request (RFC 1928). - The proxy connects to the website from its datacenter IP and relays bytes in both directions.
- The TLS encryption runs from your program to the website, through the tunnel. The proxy sees the hostname and the amount of data, not the page content.
So a proxy changes the address the website sees. It does not change your browser's language, time zone or cookies. The SOCKS5 vs HTTP guide explains both tunnel types.
What makes an IP a datacenter IP?
An IP is a datacenter IP when the network that announces it on the internet is a hosting, cloud or transit company rather than a home or mobile provider. Every public IP block is announced by an autonomous system, identified by an ASN, and registered with one of the five regional internet registries: ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC and AFRINIC.
Lookup services read those records and classify the network. A block held by a colocation or server company gets a "hosting" or "data center" label. A block held by a broadband company gets "ISP". PeeringDB, the public directory of networks and facilities, also records a network type such as "NSP", "Content" or "Cable/DSL/ISP".
This is why a datacenter proxy never looks like a home connection, and an honest seller should not promise that it does. We lease datacenter IPv4 addresses from established upstream hosting and network partners. These IPs are registered to hosting networks (ASNs), not to home internet providers, and no residential or mobile device is involved. You can check any address yourself with the steps in how to check a datacenter IP.
How do datacenter, residential and mobile proxies differ?
The three families differ by the network that holds the IP, not by the software. General traits, not measurements:
| Trait | Datacenter proxy | Residential proxy | Mobile proxy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network that holds the IP | Hosting or transit company | Home broadband provider | Mobile carrier |
| Usual IP database label | Hosting / data center | ISP | Mobile / cellular |
| Usual billing | Per IP, per month | Per GB of traffic | Per port or per GB |
| Same IP for weeks | Yes, with static IPs | Rarely | No, carrier IPs change |
| Fits allowlists | Yes | Poorly | Poorly |
| Sold by RackProxies | Yes, IPv4 only | No | No |
The datacenter vs residential comparison goes deeper, with prices.
What is the difference between static and rotating datacenter proxies?
A static datacenter proxy keeps the same IP for the whole rental, while a rotating one gives you a new exit IP per request or per time window. With a rotating product, you connect to one gateway address and the provider picks the exit IP from a pool.
RackProxies sells static IPs only. You receive a list of fixed addresses and decide in your own code which job uses which IP. Static IPs suit allowlists, long sessions and monitoring from a known address. If you want to spread jobs over several IPs, a few lines of code do it; see rotating vs static datacenter proxies.
What is the difference between dedicated and shared datacenter proxies?
A dedicated proxy IP is used by one customer at a time, while a shared IP serves several customers at once. Shared IPs cost less per IP, but other users' traffic affects how websites treat the address.
Dedicated: during your rental, each IP is assigned to your account only and is not shared with other RackProxies customers. Dedicated does not mean "never used before": an IPv4 address has a history, and nobody can promise a spotless one. If an IP does not work or is unusable for a lawful use, write to support: we fix it or replace it with an IP in the same country, subject to stock. The dedicated vs shared comparison lists the trade-offs.
When should you use a datacenter proxy?
Use a datacenter proxy when a fixed, known IP in a chosen country matters more than looking like a home user. Typical lawful jobs:
- Price and stock monitoring of public product pages.
- SEO rank tracking from several markets.
- Allowlisted access to partner APIs, firewalls and staging servers.
- Uptime and latency checks of your own services from other cities.
- Geo QA of your own site: redirects, currency, language.
Do not use one when a site is built for consumers and refuses hosting IPs. In that case a datacenter IP is the wrong tool, and the honest answer is a different product. Every rental follows the acceptable use policy. Blocked on every IP: Banking, government and payment-portal sites, plus SMTP (email-sending) ports 25, 465 and 587.
How much does a datacenter proxy cost?
Dedicated datacenter proxies are usually priced per IP per month. At RackProxies, as of October 2026, one IP costs $1.29, 10 IPs cost $12.69 and 100 IPs cost $59.25, each for 30 days. Billed per IP for 30 days, not per GB, under a fair-use policy.
For context, on 19 October 2026 Oxylabs listed $2 per dedicated datacenter IP for up to 15 IPs, Rayobyte $2.50 per IP for 5 to 99 IPs, and Webshare 20 dedicated proxies for $26.60 a month. We do not claim to be the cheapest at any volume. The price index has the full dated table, and pricing lists every plan.
Datacenter proxy questions
Can websites tell that I use a datacenter proxy?
Often, yes. A website can look up the IP's network and see that it belongs to a hosting company, because the registry and routing records are public. That is not a flaw of one provider: it is how every datacenter IP works. Use datacenter proxies for jobs where a hosting IP is acceptable, such as monitoring, allowlisted access and QA of your own sites.
Is a datacenter proxy the same as a VPN?
No. A VPN usually routes all traffic of a device through one tunnel, while a proxy is set per program or per request. With a proxy list you can send one job through a Frankfurt IP and another through a Tokyo IP at the same time. Both hide your own IP from the website; neither changes your browser settings.
Are datacenter proxies legal?
Renting and using a proxy is legal in most countries; what matters is what you do through it. Collecting public data, checking prices and testing your own apps are common lawful uses. Fraud, spam and attacks are not, and they are banned by our acceptable use policy. Abuse reports are reviewed by a person, and confirmed abuse leads to suspension.
Do datacenter proxies support HTTPS websites?
Yes. The proxy opens a tunnel with HTTP CONNECT or SOCKS5, and the encryption runs from your program to the website through it. RackProxies supports HTTP, HTTPS (CONNECT) and SOCKS5. Test the connection with the curl commands in the quickstart.
What is the difference between a datacenter proxy and an ISP proxy?
An ISP proxy, sometimes called static residential, is hosted in a datacenter but uses IPs registered to a consumer internet provider. A datacenter proxy uses IPs registered to a hosting network. RackProxies sells only datacenter IPs. We lease datacenter IPv4 addresses from established upstream hosting and network partners. These IPs are registered to hosting networks (ASNs), not to home internet providers, and no residential or mobile device is involved.
Do I need ID to buy a datacenter proxy from RackProxies?
No. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents to sign up, top up or buy. You log in with an account number, an email is optional, and you pay in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC. This suits buyers who prefer not to upload identity documents. The no-KYC page explains what we keep and why.
